Beyond Babysitting Home-based business ideas

Cottage industries are on the rise with more people wishing to work from home.

Working from your own home is not a new idea or even a modern innovation. For centuries people who had a marketable skill worked from home. They made pottery, baskets, candles and many other items that they sold door to door or in markets. If they could thatch a roof, build furniture or sew they would set up shop right where they lived.

With todays technology we see a reimergance of the cottage industry taking place. People everywhere and for every reason want to stay at home while earning enough to live on. More and more opportunities are opening up beyond babysittiing and home daycares.

Lets take a look at some of the options that are out there. The popularity of the computer has spawned the revolution in cottage industries. The need for written material and photographs are in great demand now more then ever because of those building web sites want quality content on their sites and they are willing to pay for it. The computer has also opened up the marketplace for those who make things. No longer do they have to load a cart and walk miles to the local town and set in a stall all day to sell their products. Selling and buying through the internet is big business.

There are other home based businesses that require little or no start up cost. Do you like to clean house? People are willing to pay you to clean their homes for them. Some businesses are looking for people to clean their office space. Do you live in an area where firewood is used. Cutting and selling cords of wood may be for you. Maybe sharpening saw blades, mower blades or knives would work better. Lawn care is another low cost business that has plenty of potential to grow. It can include everything from weeding a garden, raking leaves, trimming bushes to mowing. Do you like to play in the dirt then start a greenhouse if you have the space. Many people love plants but do not have the time or the skill to do this. Like messing around with electricity? Making unique lamps to sell or for special orders is another option.

Some home based businesses may take a bit more money to start. If you know how to sew there is ample opportunity to start a business from home. Investing in a sewing machine and serger and a few sewing notions could be done for around $1000. Alterations can be done, sewing for formal occasions like weddings and proms is another avenue for your sewing talents. Other options are piecing quilt tops for others to finish, making quilts to sell, both pieced and tie quilts, making costumes that could be rented out or sold, making guidons for groups that march. Military units need these and so do marching bands, baton troupes and more.

Cake making is another low cost business If you have a knack for decorating or constructing interesting cake designs. You like to cook how about catering. Or maybe you are handy at making candy. All these can be turned into home based business.

There are other opportuinties that require some major cash but not so much that it is impossible to do. Are you good on the computer? Do you like to make cards and invitations, business cards. Start a printing business. Are you good at research? Then helping people research their ancestry might be for you.

You can get special equipment like a puzzle press and make your own puzzles to sell either online or off. Good with music and sound equipment then open up your own recording studio. The need for embroidered items is growing. Teams need hats and shirts. A home embroidary business could be just the thing.

Schools and orginizations are looking for fund raising ideas. Taking orders for a specialty that you do could be turned into a business. Do you make scented or special soaps, bath salts or perfumes. What do you do that could be turned into a fund raiser? Make it your business.

Home based businesses are growing in number. It might be time to learn a new skill or take your hobby to the next level and make it into a money maker.

Great column! With two small kids and a growing desire to do more for myself and less punching of someone else's time clock, this article was a great read.

This is great. The only thing I would add is that any type of cooking out of the home is usually difficult because most counties require permits and health inspections for at home bakers/caterers.

If there's a will, there's a way. A working mom who really thinks she should stay at home and take care of her kids will surely find her own way of earning money from home. Cheers to all moms in the whole world!

I've found myself pretty well home-bound due to a stroke. I don't really have any physical problems that aren't manageable at this point. My doctor has strongly encouraged me to find less strenuous work (lawyer, addiction-counselor, school principal). At this point, I've only planted a garden (3 - 60' x 4' strips, one 30' x 20' pumpkin patch and a house-side flower garden), but they are beautiful and I've fallen in love with them. I am very interested in all reasonable home-work ideas that are not simply purchase-cons. If you've got an idea or a working model of a successful project, let me know. I'll follow your direction on whether or not to contact you, find more details, and/or tweak (an odd computer word for a garden, don't you think?) an extant project.

My thanks in advance. I DO respond e-mail, I AM polite, and I will not make a pest of myself. Let me know if you have a viable idea, and, if you wish, I'll send you what I have learned about home gardening.

Most working moms are have the idea to create a job that they can stay at home and spend more time with their family. I would urge all moms to seek a opportunity online and that may give them more family time
